What is Septic Sand?

Septic sand is a finely crushed rock material. The composition of septic sand can vary, but functionally, they all work the same. MJS Materials or your septic system installer can recommend the proper grain of sand to use for your septic system.

How a Sand Filter Septic System Works

If your home or property uses a septic system, there’s a good chance that there is a sand filter component to that septic configuration. The sand filter is located after the main septic tank area, where wastewater from your home is initially treated. The sand filter helps to purify water as it is naturally dispersed back into the ground. This sort of septic system is mostly utilized where the natural soil is insufficient at effectively filtering wastewater. This area is called a drain field, or a leach field. When you’re designing this area of your landscape architecture, it is important not to place anything impermeable above this drain field. This could negatively affect the efficiency of the drain field and the sand filter located beneath.
